Retired police officers in Ogun State have staged a peaceful protest in Abeokuta, calling on President Bola Tinubu to assent to a bill seeking to remove the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The protesters, under the Police Retired Officers Forum, Ogun State chapter, marched through parts of the state capital on Wednesday, displaying placards demanding the establishment of a dedicated Police Pension Board.
The proposed legislation, which the retirees said has already been passed by the National Assembly and forwarded to the President, would provide a separate pension structure for retired police personnel.
Speaking during the protest, the forum’s Assistant Coordinator in Ogun State, Oyekunle Oyetola, said the demonstration marked one year of the group’s campaign for the police to exit the CPS.

Oyetola said rising inflation and the increasing cost of food and healthcare had placed significant financial pressure on retired police officers. He claimed that some retirees were struggling to afford basic necessities and medical treatment.
He also questioned why the Nigeria Police Force remained under the contributory pension system despite repeated calls for a change, arguing that police personnel should receive similar pension treatment to certain other security agencies.
The retirees appealed to President Tinubu to sign the bill, saying a Police Pension Board would provide a dedicated framework for managing the pensions and welfare of retired police officers.
They maintained that their campaign would continue until their demand for an exit from the CPS and the establishment of the proposed pension board is addressed.
