Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies in Abuja -

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.

The two incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, according to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.

The first rescue took place around 5:30 p.m. in Obodo Street, Kurudu, after a resident identified as Innocent heard a baby crying and discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton.

Police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, responded to the report and rescued the child.

The baby boy was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was said to be in stable condition. Police authorities have commenced efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding his abandonment and identify his parents or relatives.

Later that night, another baby was found abandoned in Gwagwalada.

According to the police, a resident identified as Ibrahim heard a baby girl crying outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m. He, with the assistance of other concerned residents, rescued the child and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station.

The baby girl was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care. She is expected to be handed over to the Social Welfare Development authorities for further care.

The FCT Police Command commended the residents who rescued the babies and promptly alerted the authorities.

The police also appealed to members of the public with any information that could help identify the babies’ mothers or relatives to report to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s Public Relations Officer.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding both cases of abandonment.
