The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the continued detention of the boyfriend of murdered nursing student, Wendy Achumba, as investigations into her tragic death intensify.
Achumba, a 21-year-old student undergoing post-basic midwifery training at the Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School, Umulogho, was reportedly killed in her off-campus residence in Obowo Local Government Area last Thursday.
Police had earlier arrested two suspects, Onyema Okonkwo, 32, and Emmanuel Onyekachi, 25, in connection with the incident.
However, authorities disclosed that the victim’s boyfriend, whose identity has not been made public, remains in custody pending the outcome of ongoing forensic investigations.
Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, stated that all individuals currently in custody would be thoroughly investigated, and anyone found innocent would be released.
“Preliminary investigations are ongoing. Evidence recovered from the scene has been sent for forensic analysis, including fingerprint examinations.
Once it is established that the boyfriend or any other suspect is not involved, they will be released,” Okoye said.
Sources close to the case revealed that the boyfriend initially reported the incident to the police but was later detained as a prime suspect during the early stage of the investigation.

In a significant twist, one of the arrested suspects, Onyema Okonkwo, allegedly confessed to raping and killing the victim.
He also implicated Onyekachi as an accomplice, claiming both men carried out the crime before taking her life after she recognized them.
However, another source indicated that Okonkwo later altered his statement, claiming he acted alone and requesting the release of Onyekachi.
This development is believed to have further complicated the investigation and contributed to the continued detention of the victim’s boyfriend.
The police confirmed that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation and possible prosecution.
Authorities also revealed that the victim was alone in the residence at the time of the incident, as the property owner resides abroad and her roommates were away on medical training.
The Imo State Police Command assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring justice for the late nursing student.
Further updates are expected as forensic results and additional findings emerge.
