
Abia State Governor
The Abia State Government has called for the immediate arrest, arraignment, and prosecution of all suspects linked to the murder of a 21-year-old nursing student, Miss Chinwendu Achumba, who was killed in Imo State.
The deceased, an indigene of Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State, was a post-basic midwifery student at the Lady of Mercy College of Nursing, Umulogho, Obowo, Imo State.
She was found dead in her private lodge at Umuadara, Umulogho, between Wednesday and Thursday, May 20–21, 2026.
According to preliminary reports, the circumstances surrounding her death suggest possible motives linked to rejection and obsession, although investigations are still ongoing.
The Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs in Abia State described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, demanding justice under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.
The office also urged authorities to provide a public update on the investigation within 14 days, carry out an immediate security review of student accommodations in Umulogho, and ensure psychosocial support for affected students and staff.

Commending swift action by security agencies and local youths who helped identify suspects, the Abia State government also praised the response of the Imo State Government and the Imo State Police Command for making arrests and transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri.
The spokesperson further stressed that the state would closely monitor the case to ensure justice is served, noting that “any injury to an Abia student is an injury to all Abia students.”
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that operatives visited the scene immediately after receiving a report, recovered the body, and deposited it in the morgue for further examination.
The command also confirmed that one suspect has been arrested for preliminary questioning as investigations continue to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing and apprehend other individuals involved.
Alex Otti reiterated the state’s zero tolerance for violence and crime, urging thorough investigations and speedy justice for the deceased student.
