
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two women posing as healthcare providers following the tragic deaths of two mothers and their newborn babies in separate incidents across the state.
The suspects, identified as Elizabeth Aremu and Blessing Effiong, were apprehended over their alleged involvement in the incidents, which occurred in Akure and Emure-Ile, Owo Local Government Area, respectively.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, the first case was reported on April 16, 2026.
A resident raised the alarm after receiving news that a woman, identified as Mrs. Bawa Blessing, had died shortly after giving birth at a private residence in the Gloryland area of Akure.
The residence was reportedly operated by Elizabeth Aremu, who allegedly posed as a midwife. Police investigations revealed that the victim developed complications after delivery and died before she could be rushed to a proper medical facility.
Detectives who visited the scene also discovered the lifeless body of the newborn wrapped in a sack, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect.

In a separate incident reported on April 11, 2026, a 20-year-old woman, Genifer Sunday, was taken to a church in Emure-Ile during labour. The church’s prophetess, Blessing Effiong, allegedly handled the delivery.
The newborn reportedly died at the scene, while the mother later died on the way to the hospital due to complications.
Police authorities confirmed that both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The remains of the deceased mothers and their infants have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure and the Federal Medical Centre morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Ondo State Police Command assured the public that thorough investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that anyone found culpable faces justice.
The command also urged residents to seek medical attention only from qualified and licensed healthcare professionals, especially during critical conditions such as childbirth, warning against the dangers of unregulated facilities and untrained individuals.
