The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, has taken decisive steps to prevent a potential outbreak of violence among transport union members following the killing of a prominent official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaiya.
Ajiboye, who served as the Organising Secretary of the NURTW, was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen, triggering tension and fears of reprisals within transport unions across the state.
In response, the police commissioner convened a crucial meeting with leaders of the NURTW and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), urging them to maintain peace and allow security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident.
Tijani assured stakeholders that the Lagos State Police Command had already launched a comprehensive investigation and deployed officers to strategic locations across the state to maintain law and order.
“We appeal to all parties to remain calm and avoid any actions that could disrupt public peace. The police are committed to a professional and unbiased investigation, and those responsible will be brought to justice,” he stated.

The commissioner also called on members of the public to provide credible information that could aid in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
In their responses, leaders of both transport unions pledged their commitment to peace. The Lagos State Chairman of the NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle, reaffirmed that the union had been actively engaging its members to remain calm and law-abiding.
“We will not tolerate any act of violence or disobedience. Any member found attempting to cause trouble will be handed over to the authorities,” Adekunle said.
Similarly, representatives of RTEAN expressed support for the police investigation and assured that their members would not engage in any activities capable of causing unrest.
As part of preventive measures, stakeholders agreed on the need for public awareness campaigns to discourage violence and promote calm while investigations continue.
The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice is served and maintaining peace across Lagos State during this sensitive period.
