The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered an alleged illegal gold mining operation in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory and arrested two suspects.
The operation was carried out by the Corps’ Mining Marshals following intelligence and a petition concerning alleged unlawful mining activities within an area covered by a valid exploration licence.
According to the NSCDC, its specialised enforcement team raided the site and apprehended the suspects while gold extraction activities were ongoing.
Preliminary investigations reportedly showed that the mining activities were being carried out outside the boundaries of an approved mineral title, raising concerns over possible violations of mining regulations and unauthorised exploitation of mineral resources.
The Corps also said the activities could pose environmental and security risks, with residents previously expressing concerns about the impact of unregulated mining in the area.
The two suspects are currently assisting investigators, while efforts are ongoing to identify other individuals allegedly connected to the operation.

The authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the mining activities and determining the extent of possible offences under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, John Onoja Attah, warned that illegal miners would not be allowed to use any part of the country as a safe haven.
He said individuals and groups involved in unauthorised mining would be identified, investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Attah added that the Mining Marshals would continue operations aimed at disrupting illegal mining networks and protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources.
