
Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, has died at the age of 50.
The Federal Government confirmed his passing in a statement released in Abuja by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to the ministry, Lele died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, following a prolonged illness.
Describing him as a dedicated and distinguished diplomat, the ministry noted that until his death, he served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division. A career foreign service officer, Lele had recently been appointed ambassador-designate to Algeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after his nomination was confirmed by the Senate.
Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano. Over the course of his career, he served in Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

The ministry highlighted his intellectual strength, strategic thinking, and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy goals.
Permanent Secretary Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received his remains at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, described him as a hardworking, humble, and exemplary officer whose loss would be deeply felt.
The ministry added that his death represents a significant loss not only to his family but also to Nigeria’s Foreign Service and the nation as a whole.
Lele was buried in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites. The ministry extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the people of Bauchi State, while offering prayers for his peaceful rest and strength for those he leaves behind.
