A senior officer of the Nigerian Navy has been accused of assaulting a serving sailor, Seaman Mohammed Kyari, leaving him with bodily injuries and impaired vision at the Nigerian Navy Logistics Command in Dawakin Tofa, Kano State.
According to a petition dated October 16, 2026, Kyari’s brother alleged that the incident occurred on October 14 while the sailor was performing his duties as a sentry at the facility’s main gate.
The petition stated that Kyari had requested a store receipt or gate pass from occupants of a vehicle carrying items out of the naval premises. The sailor reportedly insisted that the required documentation be presented before the goods could be allowed to leave, in line with established security procedures.
However, the occupants allegedly lacked the necessary documents, prompting Kyari to direct them to obtain the required authorisation.
The petitioner claimed that a senior officer at the gate became angry over the incident, verbally abused the sailor and ordered his detention in the guardroom.
The petition further alleged that the officer picked up a stick and beat Kyari while he was being taken into custody, inflicting injuries that reportedly affected his eyesight.

Kyari’s brother expressed concern that the sailor remained in detention without adequate medical attention despite his alleged injuries and impaired vision.
Describing the incident as an alleged abuse of authority, the petitioner called on the Nigerian Navy and relevant human rights institutions to intervene and ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated.
The petition was addressed to the Chief of the Naval Staff through the Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Logistics Command, Kano. Copies were also sent to the National Human Rights Commission, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Director of Naval Provost.
The petitioner urged the relevant authorities to investigate the allegations of assault, grievous bodily harm, inhuman treatment and unlawful detention.
As of the information contained in the petition, no official response from the Nigerian Navy was provided, and the allegations had not been independently established.
