The Nigerian Navy and other security agencies have arrested 12 people in Akwa Ibom State over an alleged illegal recruitment and training operation being conducted under a purported maritime and security academy.
The suspects were arrested on Monday, August 31, 2026, during a joint operation in Uwa West, Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state.
The operation followed intelligence received by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Jubilee regarding the activities of the purported academy, which was allegedly recruiting and training individuals as provisional cadets.
Acting on the intelligence, personnel from NNS Jubilee, Headquarters 2 Brigade/Operation Thunder, 6 Battalion of the Nigerian Army and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command raided the Merchant Seaman Academy, where the alleged recruitment and training activities were taking place.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the recruitment exercise was neither authorised nor recognised under relevant laws and regulations.
According to the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspects comprise six alleged organisers or officials, five recruits or trainees and one cadet of the academy.

The suspects were subsequently handed over to the VCRU of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy said the operation highlights the importance of intelligence gathering and collaboration among security agencies in tackling activities capable of threatening public safety.
It also warned that job seekers, particularly young Nigerians seeking opportunities in the military, maritime and security sectors, could be vulnerable to fraudulent recruitment schemes.
The Navy therefore urged members of the public to exercise caution when responding to recruitment advertisements from organisations claiming to represent military, security or maritime institutions.
Prospective applicants were advised to verify the legal status and authenticity of such organisations and recruitment exercises through the appropriate government authorities before making payments or submitting personal information.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to working with other security agencies to protect the public, disrupt criminal activities and prevent unsuspecting Nigerians from falling victim to fraudulent recruitment schemes.
