“My father didn’t die from diabetes,” Isyaka Rabe said Sunday, directly rejecting the Katsina State Government’s claim that his late father, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, died from diabetes and hypertension complications. In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Isyaka insisted the retired general had no history of either illness.
The family believes the general suffered a heart attack while in captivity. Isyaka pointed to the restrained legs shown in the kidnappers’ last video as evidence. Some viewers also suggested a snake bite may have been involved. “I truly don’t believe it was diabetes.
In our view, it was a heart attack. His legs were restrained. Moreover, some people said that he was walking, and he didn’t die, so God knows, since only God is the knower,” he said.

Major General Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30 by bandits. On June 6, the kidnappers released a four-minute video demanding the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations. Abubakar and his wife appeared in the video appealing to the Katsina State Government for their freedom. The government confirmed Abubakar’s death on Saturday and attributed it to diabetes and hypertension complications.
While praying for his father’s repose, Isyaka described him as a deeply religious and peace-loving man who lived a simple life. He added that the late general died a hero. Isyaka said he had no details on how the body was recovered and urged the public to direct such questions to the government.
He also dismissed social media reports claiming his mother had been released. “Whoever says she has been released, I, Isyaka Rabe, son of Major General Rabe, I say that is a lie; she has not been released. Right now, she is still in their custody,” he said. President Bola Tinubu expressed sorrow over the death, while the Defence Headquarters pledged to intensify operations to bring those responsible to justice.
