Suspected bandits launched a daring attack on a Shari’ah court in Gwarjo village, Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Wednesday, firing sporadically while searching for a presiding judge, Mohammed Muktar.
The incident, which occurred around midday, caused panic among residents and court users as the heavily armed assailants stormed the premises, reportedly aiming to abduct or assassinate the judge.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers entered the courtroom shooting indiscriminately and repeatedly demanded to know the judge’s whereabouts.
However, Mohammed Muktar narrowly escaped by fleeing through a window moments before the gunmen reached the courtroom.
According to a resident, the judge’s quick response saved his life, as he was assisted by a commercial motorcyclist who helped him escape the area before the attackers arrived.

After discovering that the judge had escaped, the gunmen reportedly became enraged and issued threats, vowing to kill him if he returned to preside over court proceedings in the community.
Another eyewitness confirmed that the attackers openly declared their intention to track down the judge should he continue his judicial duties in Gwarjo.
The attack has heightened fears among residents of the area, which has been repeatedly targeted by armed bandits in recent years.
It also raises serious concerns about the safety of judicial officers and public servants operating in rural communities affected by persistent insecurity.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
