A mother has recounted the final moments of her daughter, Kehinde, before she was allegedly abducted by gunmen while travelling to an NYSC orientation camp in Imo State.
Kehinde, one of a pair of twins, was reportedly among several passengers abducted after gunmen attacked two commercial buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Mbaitoli Local Government Area on Thursday.
According to her mother, Kehinde left Samonda in Ibadan around 9am on Wednesday alongside other corps members heading to camps in the South-East and South-South.
She reportedly spent the night in Imo State before continuing the journey early Thursday morning.
The woman said her daughter sent a message to the family WhatsApp group shortly after 6am, simply reading “kidnapper.” She also attempted to call the family, but her phone became unreachable shortly afterwards.

Gunmen Attack Two Buses On Owerri-Onitsha Road, Abduct Passengers
The mother said the corps members were travelling in three vehicles, adding that one of the vehicles managed to escape while passengers in the other two were allegedly taken into the bush.
She said the family later received a video showing one of the vehicles, while information from the scene suggested that the passengers and drivers had been abducted.
The distraught mother appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to help locate and rescue her daughter, noting that her twin sister, Taiwo, had already reached her NYSC camp in Enugu.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers reportedly stopped the buses around the Umunoha axis of the highway before taking passengers’ belongings and leading them into a nearby bush.
The buses were said to be travelling from Lagos towards Anambra when they were attacked amid slow-moving traffic.
A source familiar with the incident claimed the attackers took advantage of the traffic situation, particularly when vehicles slowed down because cattle were crossing the road.
Videos from the scene showed the two buses abandoned on the highway, with residents and other road users gathered around them.
One of the vehicles was identified as Uko Akwa Ibom Motors bus marked Uko/133.
An eyewitness alleged that passengers from both buses were taken away after being robbed, while security personnel reportedly arrived at the scene.
The eyewitness further claimed that police officers and soldiers entered the surrounding bush in an effort to locate the victims.
However, the exact number of people abducted could not be independently confirmed.
As of the time of filing the report, the Imo State Police Command had not officially confirmed the incident. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, was also reportedly yet to respond to calls and messages seeking clarification.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of travellers using major highways in the South-East.
