Operatives of the Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, have arrested a young mother and her alleged accomplice over the illegal sale of a newborn baby for ₦2.9 million.
The incident, which occurred in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area, involved the baby’s mother, identified simply as Chioma, and a self-acclaimed prophetess, Precious Uchenna, who is believed to be the prime suspect.
According to preliminary investigations, Chioma revealed that shortly after giving birth, the prophetess took custody of the baby and facilitated the illegal transaction with the help of another individual. She disclosed that she received only ₦300,000 from the deal, while the remaining sum was allegedly retained by the accomplice.
Chioma further stated that the prophetess provided her with accommodation after she was reportedly rejected by her family during pregnancy. The baby was subsequently handed over to another woman following the transaction.
In her defense, the suspect, Precious Uchenna, claimed her actions were driven by a desire to assist the young mother, who was facing difficult circumstances. However, she failed to justify why she kept the bulk of the money from the sale.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of SASA, Mr. Monday Nwokoye, condemned the act, describing it as child trafficking disguised under religious influence.
“No individual has the right to transfer the custody of a child through private arrangements without involving appropriate government agencies,” he said. “This is a serious crime, and we urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.”
Nwokoye confirmed that the suspects were apprehended in separate locations following intelligence reports and community collaboration. He reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on child trafficking and related crimes.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Onyekesi, also condemned the incident, stressing that all matters concerning child adoption and welfare must strictly follow legal procedures.
Authorities confirmed that the baby has been successfully traced and rescued unharmed. The child is currently receiving proper care while investigations and legal processes continue.
The suspects have been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for further investigation and possible prosecution.
