A fire outbreak at the Nigerian Railway shopping complex in Ibadan, Oyo State, has destroyed goods, household items and business equipment worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, affecting three shops within the railway complex located along the Aleshinloye Market Road.
According to reports, the fire started at about 5:00 a.m. and had caused significant damage before emergency responders were alerted.
One of the affected traders, Busari Olayemi, said residents around Quarters 4 alerted shop owners to the fire at about 6:00 a.m.
Olayemi, who operates an interior decoration business with his business partner, Adebola Sunday Adeniyi, estimated their losses at about ₦21 million.
He said the fire destroyed window blinds, curtain fabrics, industrial sewing machines, tools and other equipment, including materials belonging to customers.
“We lost a lot of things in the fire. Our customers’ fabrics were burnt, while our industrial sewing machines and tools were also destroyed,” he said.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters had successfully brought the blaze under control.
He clarified that the fire occurred within the Nigerian Railway complex and not directly at Aleshinloye Market.
The cause of the fire had not been established as of the time of filing this report, while the extent of losses suffered by other affected traders is still being assessed.
The incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety and the need for businesses operating in commercial complexes to maintain adequate preventive and emergency measures.
