Lionel Messi has written his name into World Cup history again after scoring in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria on Monday night.
The brace made the Inter Miami forward the third player ever to score in six consecutive World Cup matches. He joins France legend Just Fontaine, who achieved the feat in 1958, and Brazil’s Jairzinho in 1970.
Messi arrived at the Austria game in red-hot form after netting a hat-trick against Algeria days earlier. He had also scored in Qatar during the last World Cup, extending his run across two tournaments.
