Nollywood actress Nancy Isime has sparked conversation online after saying she does not believe marrying a poor partner can give a woman a fulfilling life.
Speaking on the Tea With Tay podcast, the actress addressed the role of money in relationships and marriage. She argued that while love is important, financial struggles can take away the joy of family life.
“Marriage is not a poverty alleviation scheme but I don’t believe marrying a poor man can make you happy,” Isime said. “When rent is due, school fees can’t be paid and there is no food in the house, it is difficult to have a fantastic life.”

She clarified that she is not saying love cannot exist without money, but stressed that love and a comfortable life are not the same thing. According to her, constant financial pressure can deprive couples of peace and happiness in marriage.
Isime advised intending couples to achieve a reasonable level of financial stability before getting married and starting a family. She said this would allow them to focus on building their relationship rather than battling daily survival.
The actress’s comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that financial readiness is key, while others defended love as the foundation of marriage.
