
Several people are feared dead after a boat carrying about 40 passengers capsized in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, August 20, 2026, with men, women and children said to have been aboard the boat when it overturned.
A resident who confirmed the incident said only five passengers had so far been rescued, while more than 20 bodies were reportedly recovered from the water. However, the exact number of casualties could not immediately be verified.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency responders and local residents searching the water for passengers who may still be missing.
The incident has plunged the community into mourning as families await information on the whereabouts of their loved ones.
Residents have appealed to relevant authorities to intensify rescue efforts and deploy additional resources to the affected community.

The boat accident reportedly occurred exactly one year after a similar incident in Kijio community, also in Goronyo Local Government Area.
The cause of Thursday’s accident and the identities of those involved were yet to be officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, Ahmed Rufai, said the command would issue an official statement on the incident.
Meanwhile, a senior official of the National Emergency Management Agency, identified simply as Alhaji Ibrahim, said NEMA personnel were on their way to the community to support the ongoing response.
