A young man identified as Azeez has reportedly died following an alleged assault by suspected cultists over a missing mobile phone in the Oko-Oba area of Agege, Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, August 3, after an argument broke out following a gathering in the area.
A police source said the disagreement was linked to a missing phone and later escalated into an assault on Azeez by some individuals said to be his friends.
The source confirmed that Azeez sustained injuries during the incident and later died.
“We got a report that he passed away as a result of an assault on him by some suspected cultists said to be his friends. The argument was as a result of a missing phone,” the source said.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, gave another account of the incident.
The platform alleged that the matter began during a birthday celebration on Sunday night, August 2, when a fight reportedly broke out.
According to the group, a man identified as Abela allegedly picked up a phone and handed it to Azeez for safekeeping.
The owner later noticed that the phone was missing and reportedly traced it to Azeez. Azeez was said to have explained that Abela gave him the device.

However, Abela allegedly denied giving Azeez the phone, despite claims by witnesses that they saw him hand it over.
Naija Confra alleged that Azeez was subsequently assaulted before another confrontation occurred between him and Abela over the disputed phone.
The advocacy group further claimed that Azeez was later taken to another location where he was allegedly attacked by suspected members of the Neo-Black Movement.
The police source did not provide details about the alleged second assault or identify those responsible.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was reportedly unavailable for immediate comment.
The circumstances surrounding Azeez’s death remain under investigation, while the additional allegations made by the advocacy platform have not been independently verified.
