The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has revealed that more than 16,000 vehicles were impounded within the past year as authorities intensified efforts to tackle traffic violations and reduce road accidents across the state.
The agency raised concerns over the increasing number of crashes involving dispatch and courier riders, blaming reckless riding, traffic violations and poor compliance with safety regulations for many of the incidents recorded on major Lagos roads.
According to LASTMA, over 862 accident victims were rescued through emergency interventions carried out in 2025, while several dangerous traffic corridors including Eko Bridge, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ikorodu Road and Oshodi-Apapa Expressway continued to witness frequent motorcycle-related crashes.

Speaking during a road safety stakeholders’ meeting held at the agency’s headquarters in Oshodi, transportation officials warned courier operators and dispatch riders against ignoring traffic laws and safety procedures.
Officials noted that investigations linked many of the accidents to one-way driving, reckless overtaking, fatigue, poor motorcycle maintenance, use of phones while riding and refusal to wear protective gear such as crash helmets and reflective jackets.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said dispatch riders remain important to Lagos’ commercial activities but stressed that safety must become a top priority to reduce avoidable deaths and injuries on the roads.
The Lagos State Government also urged courier companies to organise regular safety training and strengthen monitoring systems for riders, while the police advised operators to remain security conscious during daily operations across the state.
