
Lagos State recorded 65 suspected fatalities in fire and other emergency incidents between January and September 2026, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The agency disclosed this in its Third Quarter Activity Report, stating that it responded to 1,324 emergency incidents across the state during the nine-month period.
Fire outbreaks accounted for the majority of the incidents, with 1,135 calls recorded. Other emergencies included 100 salvage operations, 79 rescue calls, nine building collapses and one gas-related explosion.
The report revealed that 210 people were rescued alive, while 65 suspected fatalities were recovered during emergency operations.
Property losses were estimated at ₦13.24 billion, while assets worth approximately ₦79.44 billion were saved, bringing the total value of property affected to ₦92.68 billion.
January recorded the highest number of emergencies with 203 incidents, followed by March with 201, while September had the lowest figure at 94 incidents.

The service also reported 341 false emergency calls, warning that such calls could delay responses to genuine emergencies and put lives at risk.
The Controller-General of the service, Margaret Adeseye, urged residents, businesses and institutions to strengthen fire-prevention measures, particularly as the dry season approaches.
Residents were advised to avoid indiscriminate burning, store flammable materials safely, unplug electrical appliances when not in use, avoid overloading sockets and ensure that fire extinguishers remain functional.
The agency also encouraged the public to keep emergency exits clear, report fire outbreaks promptly and cooperate with emergency responders.
The service emphasised that fire safety is a shared responsibility and urged residents to prioritise preventive measures to reduce fatalities and property damage.
