
The Jigawa State Police Command has announced the launch of a statewide traffic enforcement exercise tagged “Operation Velvet” to address persistent traffic violations and improve road safety across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawal Shiisu Adam, the operation will officially commence on August 24, 2026, and will be implemented simultaneously across all 27 local government areas in Jigawa State.
The initiative will be carried out in collaboration with relevant security agencies and traffic management authorities to ensure strict compliance with road traffic regulations.
The police said the operation aims to reduce road accidents, protect lives and property, and promote safer roads for motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.
As part of the exercise, joint enforcement teams will conduct intensified patrols, stop-and-search operations, and targeted enforcement activities on major highways, urban roads, markets, motor parks, and other high-traffic areas.

The command identified several traffic offences that will receive special attention, including overloading of passengers and goods, reckless driving, driving against traffic, operating vehicles without valid documents or number plates, the use of unroadworthy vehicles, illegal parking, and failure to obey traffic signs.
The police also disclosed that a mobile court would be established to ensure the speedy prosecution of traffic offenders.
Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, directed officers participating in the operation to carry out their duties professionally while respecting the rights of citizens.
He also warned security personnel against extortion, corruption, abuse of power, and other forms of misconduct.
The police urged commercial drivers, motorcycle and tricycle operators, transport unions, private motorists, and other road users to cooperate with the enforcement teams by ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all necessary documents are up to date.
