
The wanted inmate
A convicted inmate has escaped custody following a road accident involving a vehicle conveying prisoners in Yobe State.
The incident occurred on April 13 while inmates were being transported from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum to Damaturu.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Yobe State Command, Abdullahi Adamu, confirmed the development and declared the inmate wanted.
According to the statement, the vehicle conveying the inmates was involved in a road traffic accident, creating a moment of chaos during rescue efforts.
“The unfortunate incident occurred while efforts were being made to rescue victims of the crash. In the process, one of the inmates managed to flee the scene,” the statement said.
The escaped inmate has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, a 30-year-old man from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa. He bears prison number J/1539/24 and was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024.

The correctional service described the fugitive as dangerous and warned members of the public to avoid any form of contact or engagement with him.
Authorities have urged anyone with useful information about his whereabouts to report immediately to the nearest police station or correctional facility.
The command also provided emergency contact lines for public assistance, including 07038397460, 07063348987, the MSCC Potiskum Duty Office on 08062211873, and the Yobe State Command headquarters on 08038452982.
Residents, particularly those around the Potiskum–Damaturu road, have been advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious individuals.
The command further warned that harbouring a fugitive is a criminal offence punishable under the law, while appealing for public cooperation to ensure the inmate is swiftly returned to custody.
