Former Belgian star Eden Hazard has opened up on why he chose not to inherit Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary No. 7 jersey after his move to Real Madrid.
Hazard completed a high-profile €100 million transfer from Chelsea FC to the Spanish giants in 2019, arriving at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium just one year after Ronaldo’s departure.
Despite expectations that he would take over the iconic shirt number, Hazard revealed he had no intention of stepping into Ronaldo’s shoes.
Speaking in a recent interview with Canal Plus, the former playmaker emphasized his desire to build his own identity at the club.

“I went there to be myself, not to replace Ronaldo,” Hazard said. “I didn’t want the No. 7 shirt.”
Instead, Hazard admitted he had his sights set on a different jersey the No. 10 shirt worn by Luka Modrić. However, his request was unsuccessful.
“I wanted Modric’s No. 10. I thought he might agree, but he didn’t,” he added.
Hazard’s time in Madrid ultimately fell short of expectations, as persistent injuries and fitness struggles disrupted his four-year spell at the club.
His revelation sheds light on the mindset he carried into one of football’s most demanding environments choosing individuality over the pressure of inheriting one of the game’s most iconic legacies.
