Dotun Oladipo, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publisher of Eagle Online, has died at the age of 56.
Oladipo’s death was announced by Eagle Online early Wednesday. According to the publication, the veteran journalist was in his usual state of health earlier in the day before he suddenly fell ill at his office.
His death has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s media industry, with colleagues, friends and professional associates mourning a journalist widely described as a thorough professional and a humble man.
The President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Danlami Nmodu, also confirmed Oladipo’s death in a message shared on the guild’s WhatsApp platform on Tuesday.
Nmodu, who described Oladipo as an Emeritus President of the guild, wrote, “It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
Oladipo had previously served as president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers.
The General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Nkanu Egbe, also announced his death in a statement on Wednesday.
Egbe said Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, describing his passing as a devastating loss to both the cooperative and the Nigerian journalism profession.
“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the sudden death of our President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, at the age of 56,” Egbe stated.
He said Oladipo led the cooperative with dedication while maintaining a distinguished journalism career spanning nearly three decades.
“His passing is a devastating loss not only to IMPCMS but to Nigerian journalism as a whole,” he added.
Egbe said details concerning funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership would be communicated in due course, while urging members to remember Oladipo’s family in their prayers.
The African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, also mourned the journalist in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Sowore described Oladipo as a “complete gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being,” while extending his condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and members of Nigeria’s digital journalism community.
Oladipo had a journalism career spanning almost three decades. He served as Politics Editor of PUNCH Newspapers and was also a member of the newspaper’s editorial board.
After leaving PUNCH, he worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before establishing Eagle Online.
He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
Following news of his death, professional colleagues and associates took to social media to pay tribute to Oladipo, remembering him as a dedicated journalist, respected media professional and compassionate colleague.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and associates at a later date.
