
Gunmen have abducted a school principal, four students, and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc staff member during an attack on a secondary school in Kogi State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, located in Dekina Local Government Area. The attack reportedly took place around 5:25 p.m. while students were writing their ongoing NECO examination.
Confirming the development, the Kogi State Police Command disclosed that the assailants stormed the school premises and took the victims into the bush.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Salisu Oyiza, security operatives swiftly responded to the situation. A joint team comprising police officers and other security agencies has since launched a search-and-rescue operation.
“So far, one of the abducted students has been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible,” Oyiza stated.
She further revealed that the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, alongside other top security officials, has moved to the scene to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and coordinate ongoing operations.

In a related development, the command also confirmed an earlier incident involving the abduction of passengers transporting a corpse along the Ochadamu–Ejule Expressway on July 9, 2026.
The deceased, identified as a Federal Road Safety Corps official, was being conveyed for burial when the attackers struck.
Security operatives later recovered the abandoned vehicle and casket, which was subsequently deposited at a mortuary in Ejule. Efforts are still ongoing to rescue those abducted during that incident.
Authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safe return of the victims and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
