Tragedy struck at Nenwenta in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall reportedly caused an elevated water tank to collapse onto a residential building.
Four members of the same family, including a man, his wife, his elderly mother and one of their children, reportedly died when the building was completely flattened.
A four-year-old child was, however, rescued alive from the rubble by emergency workers.
The incident occurred over the weekend after torrential rainfall reportedly eroded the ground supporting the water tank, causing it to topple onto the house.
The Enugu State House of Assembly confirmed that four people died in the incident. Lawmakers said rescue efforts were reportedly hampered by poor road access after the landslide cut off Ugwueme and Nenwenta communities.

The Assembly has called on relevant government agencies to urgently restore access to the affected communities and intervene in the landslide.
Lawmakers also urged residents to avoid building close to hills or carrying out reckless excavation of soil and stones, warning that such activities could increase the risk of landslides.
The Enugu State Ministry of Works, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and Ecological Fund Office were also urged to take immediate action.
