At least two people have died, while hundreds of residents have been displaced following severe flooding that ravaged more than 18 communities in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The Nasarawa State Government confirmed the incident on Monday, describing it as a major humanitarian disaster that destroyed several buildings and farmlands.
The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Lafia, the state capital.
According to the commissioner, the flooding affected communities in the Eke Development Area of Doma LGA, forcing many residents to flee their homes in search of safety.
Aboki said Governor Abdullahi Sule had directed the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) to visit the affected communities and assess the extent of the damage.
He added that the state government was compiling a report to determine the level of intervention required.
The commissioner, who visited the affected areas alongside the Chairman of Doma Local Government Area, expressed sympathy to the victims and families of those who lost their lives.

Many displaced residents have reportedly taken refuge in communities on higher ground, including Agyema, Agbachi and Rukubi. Their presence has placed additional pressure on the host communities.
The government said arrangements were underway to provide relief materials and essential supplies to the affected residents to minimise hardship and prevent possible disease outbreaks.
However, the commissioner warned displaced residents against returning to their homes prematurely, citing concerns over a possible release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
He also urged residents living in flood-prone lowland areas to relocate to safer, higher ground in line with advisories issued by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The government said efforts would be made to facilitate the return of displaced residents when the floodwaters recede and conditions become safe.
