A five-month-old baby girl and her mother have been rescued from a canal along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI.
The mother and her child were discovered at Abule-Ado during routine clearance operations by the environmental enforcement officers.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, Lukman Ajayi, the mother could not provide a satisfactory explanation for their presence in the canal. She reportedly told officials that she had been running away from her husband, who lives in FESTAC.
The five-month-old baby was said to be in poor health at the time of the rescue, prompting the operatives to immediately move both mother and child to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The incident comes less than two weeks after KAI rescued four nursing mothers and their children from an illegal dumpsite at Agboju, also along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
One of the babies rescued during the earlier operation was reportedly only nine days old and had been living in an environment marked by filth, poor air quality and inadequate access to basic necessities.
The repeated rescues have raised concerns about the vulnerability of mothers and young children living or seeking refuge in unsafe environments. The incidents also highlight the need for stronger collaboration between environmental enforcement agencies and social welfare authorities to provide vulnerable families with safe shelter, healthcare and other essential support.
