
A joint security operation to rescue a kidnapped farmer in Edo State has ended in tragedy after an operative of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) lost his life following a gun battle with suspected kidnappers.
The deceased, identified as 43-year-old Stanley Emeni, was among security personnel deployed to rescue a 60-year-old farmer, Tuesday Osemeke, who was abducted in Igbanke, Orhionmwon Local Government Area.
According to the Edo State Police Command, officers from the Igbanke Division, ESSC operatives, local hunters, and members of the Community Safety Partnership carried out a coordinated bush-combing operation that led to a confrontation with the kidnappers.
The operation successfully secured the release of the kidnapped farmer without injury, while the suspects reportedly escaped into the forest with gunshot wounds.

However, Emeni sustained serious gunshot injuries during the exchange and later died while receiving treatment at a hospital.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, visited the late operative’s family alongside senior police officers to express condolences and pay tribute to his bravery.
The police chief described the fallen operative as a courageous and selfless officer whose sacrifice in the line of duty would not be forgotten. He assured the family and the Igbanke community that efforts to track down the fleeing kidnappers would continue.
Agbonika also disclosed that the command has reviewed aspects of its joint security operations to improve intelligence sharing, operational planning, and safety measures for personnel participating in future rescue missions.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across Edo State.
