Former Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, has criticized Mohamed Salah, labeling the Liverpool forward as “selfish” following his recent comments about manager Arne Slot.
Salah sparked controversy after Liverpool’s 4-2 loss to Aston Villa, where he publicly called for a return to the club’s traditional “heavy metal” playing style associated with former manager Jürgen Klopp.
His remarks were widely interpreted as a direct critique of Slot’s tactical approach.
Reacting to the situation, Rooney expressed disappointment, stating that Salah’s comments were inappropriate, especially considering his legacy at the club.
According to Rooney, the Egyptian forward’s public criticism undermines the authority of the current manager.
Rooney further questioned whether Salah still has the physical capacity to perform in the high-intensity system he advocates.
He suggested that age and physical decline may limit the winger’s ability to sustain such a demanding style of play.

The former England striker went as far as recommending that Salah be excluded from Liverpool’s final game of the season against Brentford.
Rooney argued that if he were in Slot’s position, he would not include Salah in the squad, citing a lack of trust and respect.
Drawing from personal experience, Rooney compared the situation to his own fallout with former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, which led to him being dropped for Ferguson’s final game at Old Trafford.
Salah, who is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, has enjoyed a remarkable spell at the club, scoring over 250 goals and winning multiple major trophies.
However, Rooney believes the recent controversy has overshadowed what should have been a celebratory farewell for one of the Premier League’s modern greats.
Despite acknowledging Salah’s contributions, Rooney maintained that no player should publicly challenge a manager without consequences, emphasizing the importance of discipline and unity within the team.
