The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Ogbozalla opi Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, Igwe Eze William Ezugwu, over alleged violations of the state’s Traditional Rulers Law.
The suspension, contained in a letter dated September 24, 2026, was issued by the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles Egumgbe.
The government accused the monarch of failing to constitute a cabinet, establish a Town Union Executive and subscribe to the community’s Code of Conduct. He was also accused of running the affairs of the community single-handedly and allegedly intimidating, harassing and arresting some of his subjects.
According to the government, the alleged conduct could create tension in the community and undermine efforts to protect lives and property.
The commissioner said the decision was not connected to Peter Obi’s recent visit to the monarch’s palace, dismissing claims that the suspension was politically motivated.

The controversy began after a social media post linked the monarch’s suspension to Obi’s visit, prompting speculation of political victimisation.
Egumgbe said the monarch had been invited to his office about two weeks earlier over complaints from members of the community and was warned about the allegations against him.
The commissioner also disclosed that another traditional ruler in Mmaku community had received a warning over similar allegations involving the alleged intimidation of residents and interference with the Town Union.
The Enugu Government said the suspension takes effect from September 24, 2026.
