Eight Nigerians have died after two speedboats collided in Cameroonian territorial waters near the Tikoro area on September 6, 2026.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday.
According to the police, one of the speedboats was carrying 13 Nigerian passengers from Ikang in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State to Cameroon when it collided with another W23 speedboat powered by two Yamaha engines.
Five passengers survived the crash after local fishermen in Cameroon came to their rescue, while eight others were feared drowned.

The bodies of the deceased were later recovered and taken to Simon Beach in Ikang, Bakassi Local Government Area.
The Marine Police in Ikang have been directed to ensure that the bodies are properly identified by their families before being deposited at a morgue.
The police said they are working with relevant authorities and the victims’ families to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Investigations and other follow-up activities are ongoing, while the command said further information would be released after the details have been verified.
