Egbin Power Plc suspended operations at its 1,320-megawatt plant on Tuesday after a contractor died during underwater maintenance work, taking Nigeria’s largest power station offline.
The fatality occurred on April 28 at the plant’s pump house. A diver with Browndive Underwater Services was carrying out recovery work on a submerged pump when the equipment powered on, according to internal sources. The diver was trapped and killed by the unit’s impeller.
Felix Ofulue, Egbin’s head of corporate affairs, confirmed the incident on Thursday. He expressed condolences to the diver’s family and said the company activated emergency and safety protocols immediately. Ofulue said authorities have been notified and the company is cooperating with investigators to determine how the machinery was triggered.

The shutdown has disconnected Egbin from the national grid. Engineers and safety officials are assessing the site before the plant can be reconnected. The duration of the outage is uncertain.
Egbin is Nigeria’s largest power generation facility. The cause of the pump’s activation remains under investigation.
