
A 37-year-old driver has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command over the alleged killing of a Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) official during a traffic inspection in Akure, the state capital.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9, along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Sesan Adediji, was said to be on routine patrol with his team when he flagged down a white Mitsubishi van for a document check.
According to the police, the driver, identified as Ayoade Idowu, allegedly stopped initially but drove off when asked to present the vehicle’s relevant documents, reportedly hitting the officer in the process.
The VIO official sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where a doctor later confirmed his death.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
He added that the suspect had been arrested and detained, while police operatives had visited the scene and commenced investigations.
The case is expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
