Ted Turner, the American media pioneer who founded the Cable News Network (CNN), has died at the age of 87. His death was announced on Wednesday by Turner Enterprises.
In a statement, the family said Turner passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was remembered as a visionary media entrepreneur, philanthropist, and environmental advocate who left a lasting impact on global broadcasting and humanitarian work.
Turner began his career in his early twenties when he took over his father’s billboard advertising company. He later transformed it into a major media enterprise that expanded into television and global communications.
His most defining achievement came in 1980 with the launch of CNN, the world’s first 24-hour news channel. The network revolutionised journalism by introducing continuous news coverage, changing how audiences around the world consumed breaking stories and live events.

Tributes have poured in from media executives and colleagues, who described him as a fearless innovator whose vision reshaped modern news reporting.
CNN executives said his legacy remains central to the identity of the organisation he created.
Turner is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family has requested privacy, noting that a private funeral will be held, with plans for a public memorial to be announced later.
