Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has sparked conversation in European football after declaring that the UEFA Champions League “is not the same” without the English giants, following their qualification for next season’s competition.
Speaking after United’s thrilling 3–2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford a result that secured their Champions League return Cunha emphasized the club’s historical importance on the European stage.
According to him, both the competition and the club lose some of their identity when Manchester United are absent from it.
“The Champions League without this club is not the same competition, and this club without the Champions League is not same club,” Cunha said.
The Brazilian forward, who has been influential in United’s strong run of form, also stressed that qualification should not be seen as the final achievement, but rather the beginning of a bigger ambition for the squad.

“But it is not only the Champions League. We need to fight for the titles. This is the first step,” he added.
United’s recent resurgence has been attributed in part to interim manager Michael Carrick, whose leadership has helped stabilize the team and push them back into European contention.
Cunha praised the positive atmosphere within the squad and the renewed belief at the club.
The forward further noted that the team must build on their current momentum heading into next season, insisting that improvement and consistency will be key if they are to compete for major trophies again.
With United sealing their return to Europe’s elite competition, attention now shifts to how far the rebuilt squad can go in the coming campaign and whether they can truly re-establish themselves among the continent’s top clubs.
