
A woman identified as Mrs. Affiong Peters has died after suffering a medical emergency while travelling in a commercial bus in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident occurred late Saturday night as the bus was transporting passengers from Watt Roundabout toward the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam area.
According to the Cross River State Police Command, the driver reported that one of the passengers requested to stop along Edgerly Road. As Mrs. Peters stepped out of the vehicle to allow the passenger to disembark, she suddenly sat on the ground, became unresponsive, and was unable to speak.

Other passengers quickly assisted in returning her to the bus before she was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for urgent medical attention. However, doctors later confirmed her dead.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said preliminary findings indicate the woman experienced a medical emergency, although the exact cause of her collapse has not yet been established.
Police said the deceased’s family has been notified and is making arrangements for the preservation and burial of her remains.
Authorities expressed sympathy to the bereaved family while noting that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
