Senegal have officially parted ways with head coach Pape Thiaw following the team’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Teranga Lions were knocked out in the Round of 32 after a dramatic 3–2 defeat to Belgium. Despite taking a commanding 2–0 lead, Senegal conceded two late goals in the final minutes before losing to a decisive penalty in extra time.
Senegal’s journey in the tournament had already raised concerns. The West African side lost their opening two Group I matches against France and Norway.
However, a convincing 5–0 victory over Iran helped them qualify for the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) confirmed that the decision to dismiss Thiaw followed a comprehensive review of the team’s performance and future prospects.
“The Senegalese Football Federation informs the public that, following a meeting of the Executive Committee held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, it has been decided to initiate proceedings to terminate the role of the national team coach, Mr. Pape Thiaw, along with his entire technical staff,” the statement read.
The federation added that the move was taken in the best interest of Senegalese football after carefully assessing the team’s results at the tournament.
Thiaw’s departure marks a significant shift for Senegal as they begin the search for a new manager to rebuild and reposition the national team for future competitions.
