Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio.
The incident occurred on Thursday along the Gubio-Karote-Damasak highway as Gubio and members of his campaign team travelled to Mobbar Local Government Area for a thank-you visit to party supporters following his emergence as the APC’s consensus candidate.
According to sources, the convoy came under heavy attack around the Kareto community at about 2:30 p.m., with the terrorists reportedly firing rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and opening sporadic gunfire.
Security forces comprising soldiers, police officers, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local vigilantes responded to the attack.
The attackers were eventually repelled and forced to retreat into the surrounding bush.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, confirmed the incident, stating that police tactical operatives counter-engaged the suspected terrorists after they attacked the convoy with an improvised explosive device (IED) and RPGs.
He said the security team subsequently scanned and cleared the area to guard against possible secondary explosive threats.
Iniedu added that the convoy, conveying the APC governorship candidate, government officials and other political stakeholders, was safely evacuated to a secure location.
According to the police spokesperson, no member of the entourage was killed or injured during the attack.
