Boko Haram Attack APC Governorship Candidate’s Convoy in Borno -

The convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, was attacked by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Thursday.

The incident occurred along the Gubio-Karote-Damasak highway as Gubio and members of his campaign team travelled to Mobbar, the headquarters of Damasak Local Government Area.

The politician was reportedly heading to the area for a thank-you visit to APC supporters following his emergence as the party’s consensus candidate in its recent governorship primary.

Sources said the convoy came under heavy attack around Kareto community at about 2:30pm, with the assailants reportedly firing rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and sporadic gunshots at the convoy.

Security operatives attached to the convoy responded to the attack and engaged the suspected terrorists.

The security team reportedly included soldiers, police officers, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members and local vigilantes.

The attackers were eventually forced to retreat into the surrounding bush, while security personnel searched and cleared the area for possible secondary explosive devices.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, confirmed the incident in a statement.

Iniedu said police tactical operatives counter-engaged the suspected terrorists after they attacked the convoy with an improvised explosive device (IED) and RPGs along the Kareto-Damasak Road.

He said some police armoured vehicles were damaged during the attack, but no member of the convoy was killed or injured.

According to the police spokesperson, Gubio, government officials and other political stakeholders travelling with him were safely evacuated to a secure location.

The attack comes amid continued security concerns in parts of Borno State, where insurgent activities have remained a major challenge.

Security agencies have continued operations in the area to protect residents and road users from further attacks.
