
No fewer than eight persons have been confirmed dead, while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a tragic road accident along the Funtua–Katsina highway in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday at about 1:32 p.m. at Layin Kukah, involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus and an unregistered Bajaj tricycle.
According to a First Information Report released by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Sector Command, the crash involved a total of 25 persons. Seventeen victims were injured, while eight lost their lives.
The FRSC Public Education Officer, DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, disclosed that preliminary investigations identified wrongful overtaking as the likely cause of the fatal crash.

He noted that the agency received information about the accident at approximately 1:34 p.m., and its rescue team arrived at the scene within 30 minutes.
“The rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with the Community Watch Corps (C-Watch).
The injured victims were taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were initially deposited at the same facility before being transferred to General Hospital, Funtua,” Babajo stated.
The FRSC has urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable road accidents.
This latest incident adds to growing concerns over road safety and reckless driving on Nigerian highways.
