
The Anambra State Police Command has detained a police officer allegedly linked to the tragic death of a three-month-old baby in Okija, Anambra State.
In an official statement released on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the officer has been identified and is currently in custody undergoing interrogation, alongside other administrative procedures in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s disciplinary protocols.
According to the Command, a full-scale investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, expressed deep regret over the unfortunate incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
He assured the public of the Command’s commitment to transparency and professionalism throughout the investigation.
“The Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the facts and ensure that justice is served,” the statement read.

The police also urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tension in the area, emphasizing that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Preliminary reports from a source suggest that the incident occurred during a dispute between a landlord and a tenant.
The landlord had reportedly invited the police to intervene. However, the tenant was absent when officers arrived.
In the course of the intervention, the officer allegedly attempted to slap a relative of the tenant but missed, striking the infant instead. The baby reportedly died from the impact.
The Command assured the public that updates on the investigation would be provided as more details emerge.
