FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into the aftermath of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina following chaotic scenes involving players and coaching staff after the match.
Spain lifted the World Cup trophy with a 1-0 victory over Argentina after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time.
The final had already seen high tension after Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in the 90th minute for a foul on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.
Following the final whistle, footage circulating online appeared to show Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina involved in physical confrontations with Spain’s Eric García and Rodri. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen in an altercation involving Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.

In a statement, FIFA confirmed that its Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code arising from the post-match incidents.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the code with regard to the post-match incidents,” the statement read.
FIFA added that the committee will communicate further details after the prosecutor completes the investigation and submits a report.
The outcome of the investigation could determine whether disciplinary sanctions will be imposed on any players or officials found to have breached the governing body’s regulations.
