A 29-year-old aspiring musician has voluntarily renounced his involvement in cult activities and surrendered a firearm to security authorities in Edo State, marking a significant step toward rehabilitation and lawful living.
The development followed an anti-cultism sensitisation effort led by the Acting Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Hon. Blessing Ebhodaghe.
According to official reports, the chairman had raised an alarm after noticing suspicious activity near a school in his community, prompting a swift response from security operatives.
Personnel of the Edo State Security Corps, in collaboration with the police, conducted an operation that led to the arrest of several youths. While some were later released after preliminary investigations, the intervention created an opportunity for engagement and counselling.
Subsequently, the council chairman addressed the youths, urging them to desist from cultism, armed robbery, and other criminal activities. Shortly after the meeting, one of the young men approached authorities, expressing his decision to abandon cultism.

In a voluntary act, the individual surrendered a Beretta pistol in his possession. Security officials immediately took custody of both the suspect and the firearm, which were later transferred to the police command in Benin City for proper documentation and further investigation.
The young man explained that his decision was influenced by the chairman’s message on the dangers of cultism and the need to embrace a better path. He noted that he chose to hand over the weapon rather than dispose of it illegally, citing concerns that it could be used to commit crimes that might eventually be traced back to him.
Authorities have commended the action, describing it as courageous and exemplary. The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to tackling cultism, kidnapping, and other forms of violent crime, while encouraging other youths involved in criminal activities to follow suit.
The reformed individual, who is pursuing a career in music, has also been encouraged to use his experience to advocate against cultism and inspire positive change among his peers.
