Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has dismissed claims that FIFA is favouring Lionel Messi and Argentina at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting such allegations are being pushed by supporters of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking during a football podcast ahead of Argentina’s semi-final clash with England, Mikel rejected suggestions that global football authorities were helping the defending champions reach another World Cup final.
The discussion followed comments by former England midfielder Joe Cole, who said many football fans around the world would like to see Messi play in the final. Cole, however, clarified that he was not accusing FIFA of manipulating matches or influencing results.
Responding to the remarks, Mikel argued that Argentina’s progress in the tournament was based on merit, not preferential treatment.

According to the former Chelsea midfielder, Argentina earned a more favourable path by finishing top of their group and winning the matches they were expected to win. He maintained that the team’s success had nothing to do with FIFA and described the conspiracy theories as unfounded.
Mikel also praised Messi’s performances at the tournament, noting that the Argentine captain has continued to score goals, break records, and lead his team despite being 39 years old.
He added that if Argentina overcome England in the semi-final, they would have a strong chance of successfully defending the World Cup title they won in Qatar in 2022.
Argentina’s clash with England will determine who faces Spain in Sunday’s final after the Spaniards secured their place by defeating France in the other semi-final.
