
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recovered an illegal firearm and eight live cartridges during a raid on a residence in Uyo Local Government Area, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons across the state.
The operation was carried out on July 11 after police operatives acted on credible intelligence that a resident of Ikot Akpan Afaha Village had been using a firearm to intimidate members of the community.
During a search of the residence, officers recovered a single-barrel gun and eight live cartridges concealed within the premises. The items were immediately taken into police custody.
According to the command, investigators have commenced preliminary inquiries to determine the source of the firearm, whether it was lawfully acquired, and if it had been used in the commission of any criminal offences.

Police also disclosed that a member of the suspect’s family told investigators the firearm had allegedly been used to threaten not only residents of the community but also members of the household.
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Mohammed Azare, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling the illegal possession of firearms and ensuring that anyone found using weapons to terrorise innocent citizens is brought to justice.
He added that the command would sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at protecting lives and property while maintaining peace and public safety across the state.
The police urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information that would assist security agencies in preventing crime and improving safety across communities.
