
The Delta State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against two officers found guilty of extortion, following a viral video that exposed their misconduct.
The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, were captured receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal within a police station in Asaba.
The incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, sparked widespread outrage after the video circulated online.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of an orderly room trial conducted on the matter.
According to the statement, both officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful orders, extortion, and discreditable conduct, all of which violate provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
As part of the disciplinary measures, Inspector Jeremiah has been demoted to the rank of Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim has been reduced to the rank of Constable.

Reaffirming the stance of the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner emphasized that the Inspector-General of Police strictly prohibits the use of POS machines and other electronic payment platforms within police formations.
He stressed that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any circumstances.
The Command further warned that any officer found engaging in such misconduct would face strict disciplinary action.
Oyeniyi noted that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to other officers, while urging personnel to uphold professionalism, integrity, and respect for citizens’ rights.
He also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through appropriate channels, assuring that all complaints would be thoroughly investigated and addressed in accordance with the law.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to discipline, accountability, and restoring public trust in the Force.
