
A 35-year-old woman has been arrested by the Abia State Police Command for allegedly attempting to kill her 12-year-old house help with a knife in Umuahia.
The suspect, identified as Mrs. Nwoko Gift, was arrested after a video of the alleged attack circulated on social media, prompting a swift police response.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on July 5, 2026, at the suspect’s residence in the IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia.

Police said the victim, Miss Ebony Chimamanda, was allegedly attacked after she failed to carry out a household chore before Mrs. Gift left for the market. Investigators also alleged that the suspect had repeatedly assaulted and threatened the young girl before the incident.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters responded to the scene, rescued the victim, arrested the suspect, and recovered the knife believed to have been used during the attack.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. Police said the suspect is expected to be charged with attempted murder once investigations are completed.
The Abia State Police Command condemned the alleged act and urged members of the public to report cases of child abuse, domestic violence, and other violent crimes to security agencies for prompt action.
