Residents of Nkwoegwu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State were thrown into panic on Sunday evening after a massive fire outbreak razed a petrol station following a tanker explosion.
The incident occurred at Aka God Petrol Station at about 6:30 p.m., when a petrol tanker loaded with fuel reportedly exploded within the premises, triggering a raging inferno that lasted for several hours.
Eyewitnesses said thick smoke and towering flames quickly engulfed the station, spreading fear among residents and nearby business owners.
Despite frantic efforts by local youths and sympathisers to contain the fire, repeated bursts from the burning tanker overwhelmed their attempts.
Officials of the Abia State Fire Service arrived at the scene around 7:00 p.m. and immediately commenced firefighting operations.
After hours of intense effort, the blaze was eventually brought under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby residential buildings, a medical facility, and other surrounding structures.

Although no lives were lost, the inferno destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira within the facility. Some adjoining properties were also partially affected.
Residents of Nkwoegwu and parts of Ohuhu expressed relief that there were no casualties but lamented the heavy economic loss suffered by the business owner and the community.
Speaking on the incident, the Senior Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Homeland Security, Fire and Emergency Services, Chukwunenye Alajemba, credited the swift response of emergency personnel for averting a larger disaster.
He noted that prompt intervention played a critical role in containing the fire and safeguarding nearby structures.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the tanker explosion, as investigations are expected to commence to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
